Day 3: Is the truth always good to hear? Why or why not?

I’ve gone through these years believing that “Evil” is all that harms and “Good” is all that heals, with all else not being of moral alignment; I’ve gone believing that every decision that harms is Evil and every decision that heals is Good.  I mean, the decision to kill someone is Evil, but the only way to truly know what the person ultimately decided is to let them execute their decision up unto the point they are about to kill someone.  The same can be said with the decision to donate to a needy charity or a group in need.  The Goodness is in the decision, but we cannot know whether or not the decision was a true one until the decision is executed.  Basically, the decision to donate is Good, and the donating (the actual act) is proof.  In a metaphorical sense, the act of donating is what is being said, while the decision is the fact of the situation.

But right now, I ask you, have you ever heard the saying, “It’s not what you say; it’s how you say it”?  To continue the metaphor, you could donate a dollar to a needy charity or you could volunteer your time and labor.  The saying is now, “It isn’t what you donate; it’s how much you donate,” i.e., the more you donate, the more Good the decision was.

To look at it another way, the saying is, “It isn’t what the facts are; it’s how you present them.”

The facts are the facts; no matter how you word the theory of a spherical planet, the Earth is still round.  And what you ultimately do doesn’t change what you ultimately decided.  Sure, hindsight factors in, but that’s more of a third party/afterthought.  Let us wave at hindsight as it passes us by.  Anyways, in a metaphorical sense, the fact of the situation is what you ultimately decided, and the frilly wording is what you ultimately do.  And yes, you have to decide what facts are facts and whether or not you believe them; the fact of the situation is what you ultimately decide, and the frilly wording is what you ultimately do.  If you decided to tell the truth, but say it in the harshest way you could, then you weren’t making much of a good decision, as what you did caused harm.

If you said the truth in the most matter-of-fact way in an attempt to make it easier on everyone in the situation, then the decision was a Good decision; you tried to do as little harm as possible in a situation.

But as I indirectly said, you can tell the truth and hurt someone, meaning that the truth is not always good to hear.  Perhaps it was a necessary harm (growing pains), in which case telling the truth can be good.  The question, however, is asking whether or not telling the truth is always good.  And it isn’t always a good thing.
